The Danish government is considering the possibility of ending the gaming monopoly in the country and allowing foreign companies to operate legally. Kristian Jensen, Minister of Taxes, commented that, currently, it is illegal for foreign gaming sites, like sports betting websites, to offer their products in the Scandinavian nation.
Our office is investigating the possibility of allowing non Danish companies to enter the national market, so that they can operate together with the state company Danske Spil, as long as they comply with the regulations established by the government, Jensen said.
The Minister also revealed that sporting bets will be the first market available to foreign companies, while the government will continue controlling the lottery. Jensen also stated that he would rather have a regulated and organized market, with no control over the places Danish citizens choose to place their bets and the origin and destination of the money they bet.
Gaming operator Unibet, based in Malta, welcomed the new decisions taken in Denmark, and said they intend to work with the authorities of the country. Together with the Danish government, we expect to create a modern, regulated and responsible market, Petter Nylander, CEO of Unibet, said.
